The Diego González Rivas Foundation arrives in Peru to save another young life.

On June 13 and 14, 2024, the Diego González Rivas Foundation will launch its project in Peru, starting with a very complex case: a 21-year-old woman who needed a trachea reconstruction because she was suffocating. The urgency of the operation brought forward the Foundation’s and Dr. Diego González Rivas’s arrival in the country. The original plan was to arrive at the end of the year to establish a center of excellence in Lima, similar to the one already operating in Costa Rica and the one planned for Mexico.

In Peru, the Foundation will develop this center in collaboration with the García Chillón Orlando Foundation and the Profand Group, through its Peruvian subsidiary, Produmar. These organizations also worked together to make the surgery possible at Clínica del Inca. The Foundation is currently seeking the best hospital to host the center of excellence, with the aim of performing surgeries on underprivileged patients with complex conditions and becoming a national reference center in Uniportal VATS.

Our patient, who underwent surgery in Lima four days ago for a tracheal stenosis, is already being discharged in perfect condition and breathing very well. It was a complex procedure using Uniportal VATS with tracheal resection and carinal anastomosis, performed without intubation and with spontaneous breathing maintained throughout,” said the Spanish surgeon this Monday. A diagram explaining the surgery is attached. This operation is the first of its kind to be performed on the American continent.

The Galician surgeon expressed his gratitude to his Peruvian colleague, Dr. Chávez, and to anesthesiologist Eli Guido for their collaboration.

In addition, the Spanish surgeon performed other surgeries at Clínica Avendaño, where he also gave a masterclass to local surgeons, aiming to promote the implementation of cutting-edge surgical procedures accessible to underprivileged patients.

Dr. Diego González Rivas meets Yajaira’s daughter.

As you know, Yajaira was the first patient of our Foundation. She arrived in our country with a very complex tumor that doctors in her home country did not dare to operate on, after two failed thoracotomies. In addition, she was four months pregnant when she underwent surgery at San Rafael Hospital in A Coruña. Today, Yajaira’s happiness is a reality, thanks to the Foundation. During Dr. González Rivas’s visit to Lima, Yajaira traveled four hours to the city so the doctor could meet her daughter—whom she was able to have thanks to him—and now, as a cured woman, she can truly enjoy life as a happy mother.
